I have no good explanation for the irresponsible posting of rabbit comics. I can’t really say I’m sorry, not sincerely anyway. Here’s another one or two.

IF WE WERE ALL RABBITS…

While Rich is working on 3D-models, I entertain myself by drawing rabbits.

Btw, Rich is the inspiration for Black Rabbit.

So here it is, what it would be like IF WE WERE ALL RABBITS

But if you prefer to see what a real press day might look like, our Production Partner NTU MAGIC might give you a better picture in their Facebook album HERE. (But it’s less cute)

After more than two weeks of hiatus, 3 dates with the director, a bouquet of pink roses, and a new pet fighting fish, I have found the inspiration I was searching for: “If We Were All Rabbits” – a web comic about rabbits making a mecha film very loosely based on the true life story of how TBAHRmovie was made.

Remember KaiYang and Edwin? Tonight, you will meet KaiYang and Edwin in video. Please meet Melvin too.

Melvin in a field. Edwin took this photo. Very artistic.

Melvin 1

These three guys went with Rich for a road trip – which they prefer to call a production locations tour AKA locations scouting trip. Edwin passed me the video footage, so as a grand finale to our locations topic, we’ll join them on one of their adventures… but only tonight on #TBAHRmove’s YouTube channel.

In the meantime, please allow me to introduce Melvin with a formal multiple-choice-question:

QUESTION: The following are 4 statements about Melvin, of which 3 are true, 1 is probably false, and none of them checked for accuracy. Which of the following statements about Melvin is false?

(A)    Melvin is the assistant production manager on TBAHR Movie

(B)    Melvin is a medical student

(C)    Melvin’s favorite food is fried rice

(D)    Melvin had fun on the locations scouting trip

ANSWER: I have no idea what Melvin’s favorite food is.

Here is Melvin working on set (I wonder if you recognize the scene they are shooting?). Besides sheltering the director with blue umbrellas, Melvin was also the official driver, and a lot of other extra things. It’s very hard work to be assistant production manager!

I like Valentine’s day because its either terribly romantic or terribly emo – and sometimes both. All the kinds of emotions with very high potential for a romantic comedy run high.

Rich, is of course, very efficient as usual. We celebrated Valentine’s Day one week early to avoid the crowds and overpriced V-day specials. Ours is a romantic comedy kind of romance. I think God knew that was the kind I liked to watch – which incidentally is Rich’s least favorite movie genre (well, you can’t please everyone).

TBAHR movie is NOT a romantic comedy, although it is a lot of other things: Explosive Mecha action + human drama + a touch of humor – I will tell you it’s all in there, everything except for romance. Rich tells me to be patient, “Wait for the next film.”  He says. (*superhint) Ah well, romance is always worth waiting for.

I am standing in the middle of an abandoned building, there is debris all over the place, some were from the walls and floors, some were from the ceiling. My toddler ambles about. His blue shoes are white from dust. “What are we doing here?” I think to myself.

Rich-and-Elijah-Recee01

When we were dating, Rich often brought me through “short-cuts”. These were invariably the roads less travelled. Why walk along the pavement like everyone else? Not while we have the option of stumbling through grassy potholes, quick stepping through narrow alley ways with leaky roofs, and then passing drains and possibly sewage (it certainly smelt that way) – and this was his chosen route from the cafeteria to class on our university campus!

We had a beautiful campus…

But we had to walk here,

here,

and here.

Once I confronted him and I wonder if you’d like to hazard a guess to what he said:

a)      This way is shorter (it was not)

b)      This way is more romantic (it was not)

c)      I don’t like crowds (in which he means the presence of people)

d)      All of the above

Fast forward to the middle of the abandoned building, I tell myself that I should have known what I was getting myself in for when I married him. I take the opportunity to teach my toddler how to explore an abandoned building safely, “See that hole in the roof? Don’t hang around the pile of debris under it. See that flight of old stairs? Don’t climb it.” After which, my husband proceeds to climb that flight of old stairs to get a better view of the potential filming site.

"Why can't I, mum?"

I hadn’t for a moment suspected that he’d realize that this isn’t really the sort of place most men would bring their family for an outing to, but the sun was shining, and we were happy together. Anyway, I’ve always known Rich wasn’t like most men… (I will spare you the mush at this point and end my post here).

It seemed like a good idea at first – make video blogs – hey, it might even save me from writing – anyway, it was necessary. But video blogs turned out 100 times harder to do than writing something or posting photos.

Over the last week, I’ve learnt so many things:

1. If you stop using your video editing software for a long time (say 4 years), you won’t recognize its interface when you see it again. (But I’ve relearned it under Rich’s excellent tutelage and benevolent spoon feeding.)

Some of the “presents” he gave me

  • 1 set of magic bullet (downloaded) – “make up” for video footages
  • 1 set of homemade camera movement presets – all you need is to drag and drop it onto the clip to add movement to the shot
  • 1 set of sound tracks composed for atmosphere music
  • Opening and closing title sequences

Armed with all this, I just cut, drag, and drop clips into a sequence. I have pseudo-mastered Adobe Premiere.

2. Camera shyness can be overcome by increased exposure to a recording camera. After a few more videos, I’ll probably adapt and get used to it. The challenge of getting a proper usable shot turned out to be surprisingly enjoyable. It was an exciting experience.

3. How to make even fancy cameras become idiot proof:

  • Put everything on auto mode
  • Put camera on a stand (I just propped it on a stack of books, a shelf, or a table top) or hold it and act like a statue. Don’t move or zoom when recording.
  • Keep room well lit and use an extra light source – like a reading lamp. There’s a good technical reason that Rich had tried to explain – and I’m sure you can google it, but I only faithfully set up the lights because it’s so flattering.

4. How to make pancakes

5. If you teach you 4-year-old how to use a magic sponge (rinse with water and squeeze dry) he might go around your home cleaning EVERYTHING with it.

“This is so dirty.” (starts to clean)

“If you clean on metal, it gets shiny.”

“Let’s clean another room!”

“Look Mummy, the toilet is so shiny now!”

It lasted two days, and my house began to gleam in a becoming way.

I really like always having something interesting to learn to do.

Today I start my first day on Instagram (kattysnap). I have daydreamed of this for a while now – ever since the suggestion was given to me. And I imagine posting up artistic shots with interesting captions -like a collection of pop art… Even though I don’t think my day to day photos are very artistic to begin with, I imagine it will be different on Instagram, I will insta-pop-art.

So that is my daydream. What I’ll actually do, I will only know starting today. And what photos I’ll eventually end up with, I can predict with as much accuracy as I can see into the future, don’t you just love Social Media?

I also received an epiphany today – that having followers on Twitter and Instagram combined could really be like having someone follow you around. I don’t know if I want to be followed around, I don’t know if anyone would want to follow me around… but if you want to give it a try, I warn you… I’m busy preparing for Chinese New Year this week, so welcome to #cny #thingstodo – my recommendations that you shouldn’t take too seriously.

Rich is also tweeting and ‘instagraming’ as we speak: 3 days ago he posted.

If he were to post right now, 3 days later, the photo would be exactly the same – except right now he is sitting in the chair, and the coffee cup is empty.

Yes, follow us; watch Rich sit in front of his computer for hours. Look at my incredibly artistic/random shots of whatever catches my fancy (I can’t possibly be taking multiple shots of Rich working at the computer you know – I’m easily distracted), and eventually, when something exciting happens, you’ll be the first to know.

It’s slightly more than a week since we launched news of TBAHR movie with its teaser-trailer.

Happily life goes on as usual. The other day, a friend joked, “Rich don’t let success get to your head.” I thought it was funny. Rich didn’t even hear it, “What?” He said. I thought that was funny too.

Thank you for being happy for us, for getting excited with us, for sharing these first initial moments when our film takes its first steps into this world. Adventures are so much more fun with friends – and to have 320 of you following us on fb! I can’t wait for all the adventures we will have together!

The biggest thing that happened was the announcement of #TBAHRmovie’s existence. It was exciting for us to finally show you our teaser and see your reaction.

And we have to thank those of you who looked out for us – looking us up, reading our posts, and leaving us feedback and suggestions. We take your suggestions very seriously, enabling comments on YouTube, organizing our hashtag labels (posting soon), joining you on Instagram (Rich has started). Thank you very much!

Best media feature was by It’s Art Magazine. We can’t help but feel flattered to be published by a French art magazine under the category ‘inspiration’ you know? An unexpected honour.

Funniest misunderstanding of the week:

I was talking to Rich about the fb post below and the possibility of allowing everyone to help themselves, when he finally said, “Oh, I thought she wanted the mecha.” Hahaha.

I was told that some of you have already helped yourselves and now have cool Facebook cover photos.

We also feel we have to acknowledge Ruth. We are giving her the title of #1TBAHRfan. Because she has liked everything there is to like about TBAHR on fb. She must be our first fan and our best fb supporter yet. Other fans are Gavan, Szemin, and Joanne. But Gavan acted in this film (so look out for him in the movie), so no count. And Szemin and Joanne are more like KAI’s fans.

KAI has developed some serious fans. And it’s only been less than two weeks since the teaser appeared. He doesn’t answer on fb because he’s too shy. My advice to him is to just stay mysterious that way. Don’t encourage the fangirls… They don’t need any encouragement to begin with. Someone described this teaser as ‘Jay Chou MTV’ and Rich joked, “Arugh, it’s all KAI’s fault; I’ll have to kill him off soon.” To which a KAI fan in our midst (whom I shall not name) screamed ‘No!’ I thought it was really cute.

But I will always be rich’s biggest fan.

Back to my weekly report, last highlight: Rich started tweeting.

Was I the only one who looked at the photo and wondered “What food”? (For the record, he did it that on purpose.)

Next week is Chinese New Year and I can’t wait to show you our Chinese New Year special surprise!

And after CNY, we start on our first adventure! Let’s go exploring abandoned buildings and other shooting locations in the movie!

Every week a new adventure – how’s that for my blog motto?

See you on Monday!

Yours, Katty.

Here is my collection of TBAHR artworks… mecha-flavored eye candy. I sort of squirreled some of it away from internal emails I happened to be cc-ed in. And eventually, when I chanced upon Rich at his computer and saw he had more of it stashed in his hard drive, I pretty much demanded he surrendered them. Art should not be kept hidden.

Some of these were concept art – like the kind with the words “artists impression” next to it on fancy property launch brochures – just to give the feeling of what this film was going to become when we first wanted to make it. There are also movie posters, and artworks by designers and artists of the various mecha to appear in the film.
